The Portuguese government has published the official dates of the school calendar on its website, with the start, end and holiday dates for the various school types.
The Portuguese school calendar shows that for the year 2025-2025, classes will start between 12 and 16 September. As a reminder, to enrol a child in school in Portugal, he or she must have a NIF, a tax identification number. We can obtain this for you in just a few clicks:
School periods
For the 2025-2025 school year, Portuguese schools will once again be able to choose between a term structure (three terms) or a half-year structure (two terms). Schools also have the option of replacing up to two days of teaching activities with other educational activities involving pupils, parents and carers. In addition, they may use up to two days of the Easter holidays to set another holiday period.
The Portuguese school year ends in June, but on different days depending on the pupil's class:
Years 9, 11 and 12 pupils are the first to go on holiday at the beginning of June (6 June 2025);
A week later (13 June 2025), pupils in Years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 finish their school year;
Finally, at the end of June (27 June 2025), it's the turn of pupils in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of school and pre-school education.
School holidays
When it comes to school holidays, the Portuguese school calendar includes the four traditional periods: Christmas (two weeks), Easter (two weeks), Carnival (three days) and summer (three months).
Here are the holiday dates for the 2024-2025 school year:
Christmas: from 18 December 2024 to 3 January 2025
Carnival: 3 to 5 March 2025
Easter: 7 to 21 April 2025
Summer: 6 June 2025 (years 9, 11 and 12), 13 June 2025 (years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10) and 27 June 2025 (pre-school education and years 1, 2, 3 and 4).
