This Wednesday, the Portuguese Ministry of Internal Administration was satisfied to maintain the third place of Portugal in the Global Peace Index (GPI), ranking of the safest countries. The country ranks first among the countries of the European Union (EU).
In a statement sent to the editors, the ministry supervised by Eduardo Cabrita underlines that in the report of the Institute for the economy and peace, with approximately 100 pages and published this Wednesday, Portugal appears in third position "just behind the Iceland and New Zealand ”.
"The important security measures that Portugal has taken in recent years have led to a reduction in crime and, consequently, to a gradual and consolidated increase in this ranking," said the ministry. In 2014, Portugal ranked eighteenth in the Global Peace Index, having reached the third position in 2019.
The 14th edition of this ranking, which classifies 163 independent states and territories and covers 99.7% of the world population, concludes that “the world level of peace has deteriorated, in a world where conflicts and crises have occurred during in the past decade have started to decline, replaced by a new wave of tension and uncertainty following the pandemic. ”
In the study carried out by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the score for each country is assigned according to internal and external conflicts, security and militarization, measured by 23 indicators. "GPI 2020 concludes that the world has become less secure for the ninth time in the past 12 years, with the average peace level of countries falling by 0.34% last year. Overall, the security climate has improved in 81 countries and worsened in 80, "said the study.
