When settling in Portugal, obtaining your NIF (fiscal number) is one of the first steps to take, but the request for the Finanças portal password is just as important. Indeed if you have never registered on the Finanças portal (the Portuguese tax authorities), it is essential that you start by asking for your password. This is the most direct (in some cases the only) way to manage certain tax services. For example, via the website of the Finanças portal, it is possible to file your tax return, issue recibo verde or register and validate your invoices. Having a Finanças password is therefore essential, because many of these services and procedures are only possible via the Internet. Lisbob, the expatriate assistant, shows you how to request and obtain your password from the Finanças site in Portugal.
If you have never requested a password on the Finanças website, you must first register on the portal. For this, you will need to complete the registration form. On the home page you must click on "Register" (Registar-se) at the top right.
In the form, you must indicate your personal data:
Taxpayer number (NIF);
E-mail address;
Phone number;
Tax address.
You will also need to define a security question. This is important because you will need it if you forget or lose your password.
After filling in this information, click at the bottom right on “Register” (Registar ”). Once the registration is complete, you will automatically receive two codes, one by SMS (to secure the mobile phone number) and the other by email (to confirm the email address) You will then receive a physical letter to your tax address, which will also contain a code.
As soon as this mail reaches you, confirm the two previous codes you received. Simply go to "Confirmation by e-mail and telephone" (Confirmação de e-mail e Telefone) on the Finanças portal. The definitive password to access the Portuguese tax authorities is sent via CTT (and never by e-mail) within an average of five working days.
The sending of the final password is always made to the tax address which is registered with the Portuguese tax authorities: it is therefore important to make sure that the address in the registers of the tax and customs administration is up to date.
