What are the public and national holidays in Spain in 2022 ? What are the public holidays for the different regions of Spain ? Lisbob, the expatriate assistant in Spain tells you all about the calendar of public holidays in 2022 for Spain and each of its regions.
WHAT ARE MANDATORY PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN SPAIN ?
Compulsory holidays are the days when, officially, people must be put on leave by their employer, whether in the public or private sector. During compulsory holidays, employers, companies and institutions are required by law to grant their workers paid work exemption. On the other hand, companies where certain workers will have to perform tasks during that day must pay them, paying them more than if it were a normal working day.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF MANDATORY PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN SPAIN IN 2022 ?
The compulsory days of leave taken into account by Spanish law are classified into 2 categories of public holidays. Non-modifiable holidays and modifiable holidays. Spain granting a certain autonomy to these 17 communities with regard to the non-working days, it was decided to keep 7 festivals (generally related to the Catholic religion) which cannot be modified and deleted by the regions. These public holidays are therefore in the whole of Spain. On the other side, each region can modify or decide 5 public holidays, according to its traditions and customs.
Non-modifiable Spanish public holidays
As indicated, Spain has 7 public holidays which are the same for the whole country. These are New Years, Epiphany, Good Friday, Assumption, All Saints Day, Constitution Day, and the Immaculate Conception.
Editable Spanish holidays
Each region can modify or impose 5 public holidays in the year. However, the regions do not use these 5 days just for them, and certain public holidays are common throughout the territory. For example, Saint Joseph or Holy Thursday as well as Christmas are holidays throughout Spain. Also, May 1st is workers' day and it is generally a holiday in many countries including Spain.
WHAT SERVICES ARE CLOSED DURING MANDATORY PUBLIC HOLIDAYS?
As a general rule, on compulsory public holidays in Spain, the institutions which close their activity and offices are the same as those which are closed on Sundays. For example schools, banks, post offices, public administrations as well as many shops, supermarkets and factories. Employees who work on statutory holidays are generally paid more than normal hours.
