Orange alert for rain, hail and violent storms in 5 regions in Portugal
The Orange Alert was triggered in Portugal because of the very difficult weather conditions that will affect several parts of the country. Indeed, the regions of Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda and Castelo Branco are now under orange alert because of the forecast of showers, hail and violent storms, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA). These five districts will be under orange alert between 13:00 and 21:00 on Monday, August 26, 2019 due to the forecast of sometimes violent hail, strong gusts of wind and conditions favorable to thunderstorms. 7 other regions are placed in yellow alert. Yellow alert in 7 regions
The orange alert, the third worst on a scale of four, indicates deteriorated weather and degraded weather conditions. 5 regions are placed on orange alert today: Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda and Castelo Branco. In addition, because of heavy rains, hail, wind and thunderstorms, the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Coimbra, Portalegre, Évora and Beja will be under yellow alert also today between 13:00 and 21:00.
According to the IPMA, the orange alert, the third worst on a scale of four, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain weather-related activities.
A dull summer end
The IPMA forecasts for the present day on the continent periods of cloudy sky, favorable conditions for the occurrence of showers and thunderstorms until the end of the afternoon, especially in the regions of the interior of the Portugal, where strength and hail can be punctual. The forecast also indicates light to moderate northwest winds on the west coast south of Carvoeiro Head and moderately blowing from the eastern quadrant to the highlands until mid-morning.
Morning fog or fog is also expected in some coastal areas, a slight decrease in maximum temperature in inland areas and a slight increase in northern and central coastal areas.
Minimum temperatures on the continent will range from 13 degrees Celsius (at Guarda) to 20 degrees at Faro and at most 22 degrees at Guarda and 33 at Santarém. This summer will not have been one of the best at the weather level in Portugal.
