2 first confirmed cases of coronavirus in Portugal
Portugal has announced the confirmation of the first two cases of coronavirus on its territory. The two positive cases are found in Porto. 2 first cases of coronavirus in Porto
These are the first two positive cases of the new coronavirus in Portugal and both are admitted to hospitals in Porto, several media in Portugal citing hospital sources.
One case is that of a doctor from the hospital in Tamega e Sousa who was on vacation in northern Italy and who was hospitalized in the hospital in Santo António yesterday afternoon. The second case concerns a man who has worked in Spain and is hospitalized at the São João hospital, also in Porto, informs SIC Notícias.
The Portuguese General Directorate of Health has not yet confirmed the information. The two cases are subject to a counter-analysis, the newspaper said. Health Minister Marta Temido will give a talk this morning.
In the Azores, two suspected cases are still awaiting laboratory validation. Also at dawn, an international train operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP), the Sud Express, was stopped at Entroncamento station after a passenger claimed to have symptoms of the infection that had occurred in Wuhan, China. The woman was transferred to the hospital and the other passengers were reported to the health authorities. The train was able to restart after 4 hours of waiting.
The Portuguese health authorities are still carrying out an epidemiological investigation into possible cases of contact with the writer Luís Sepúlveda, infected with the new coronavirus and who was in Póvoa de Varzim during the Correntes d'Escritas event. The DGS requests that the persons concerned contact the SNS24 line and remain confined to their homes.
There are currently 2,000 isolation rooms in public hospitals across Portugal, including the Azores and Madeira.
The virus continues to spread
The COVID-19 epidemic, detected in December in China and which can cause respiratory infections such as pneumonia, claimed at least 2,980 lives and infected more than 87,000 people, according to data reported by 60 countries. Among those infected, more than 41,000 have recovered.
